World Turtle Day 23 May 2025
Today is World Turtle Day!
Scientific name: Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758)
Other names: Sun turtle
Status: Protected wildlife under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act B.E. 2535
Green sea turtles are relatively large and heavy when fully grown. Green sea turtles are fully grown at 4–7 years old. It is believed that they can live up to 80 years. The egg-laying season falls from June to September in the Gulf of Thailand and from September to February in the Andaman Sea. The number of eggs per laying ranges from 70–150. When fully grown, turtles will swim around to find food but will return to lay eggs on the beach where they were born.
- Food: Juveniles eat both plants and small aquatic animals. Adult turtles mainly eat plants, such as seaweed and sea grass.
- Habitat and distribution: Found in tropical and subtropical areas along the coasts of sea grass areas and islands in Thailand. They are found in nature on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
- I want turtles to be with us for a long time. Please help take care of yourself by following these simple steps:
1. Do not throw garbage into the water.
2. Do not buy, sell, or consume turtle eggs.
3. Do not throw away straws or plastics.
4. Help collect garbage.
5. Use sunscreen that does not contain environmentally harmful ingredients.
